Prescription Drug Collection Days
The Hammonton Police Department will be hosting several Prescription Drug Collection Days throughout the year. Check back often for the next event or follow our Facebook page for updates.Residents are asked to bring unwanted prescription drugs on the collection date to be safely and properly disposed of.
- All events will be held at the Hammonton Police Department.
- An officer will supervise the collection of accepted medications.
- We will be accepting pills, capsules, patches and pet medications.
- We WILL NOT be accepting syringes, needles, liquids or powders.
The Hammonton Police Department has been actively involved in medication collection efforts for many years. However, the drug collection box located in our lobby was misused, leading to a potentially dangerous situations. As a result, we have decided to suspend the program. Instead, we will be organizing specific dates for residents to bring in their unused, unwanted and expired medications for safe disposal.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has labeled prescription drug abuse an epidemic.
CDC reports that the majority of drug overdose deaths, more than six out of ten, involve an opioid. The number of overdose deaths involving opioids, including prescription opioid pain relievers and heroin, has nearly quadrupled since 1999. More than 78 people per day are dying from overdoses of opioid medications. Two in Five teenagers believe prescription drugs are “much safer” than illegal drugs. Every day in the U.S. 2,500 youths take a prescription pain reliever for the purpose of getting high for the first time. Cleaning out medicine cabinets will reduce the number of prescriptions available for abuse.
The Hammonton Police Department endorses this initiative as it effectively removes unwanted prescription medications from the possession of minors and individuals who should not have access to them. This program encourages community members to take responsibility for safely disposing of these potentially harmful drugs, especially when they are no longer needed. Discarding unused medications in the trash poses a risk, as they can be retrieved for misuse or illegal sale, while flushing them can lead to water contamination. Proper disposal methods not only safeguard lives but also protect the environment.
Take the Five-Step American Medicine Chest Challenge:
- Take inventory of your prescription and over-the-counter medicine.
- Secure your medicine chest.
- Dispose of your unused, unwanted, and expired medicine in your home
- Take your medicine exactly as prescribed.
- Talk to your children about the dangers of prescription drug abuse.

Surveillance Camera Registry
The Hammonton Police Department is reaching out to local business owners for support in enhancing the safety of our community. We are launching a program called S.P.O.T. (Surveillance Protects Our Town), which allows businesses to register their surveillance cameras with us. While we won’t have access to live feeds, knowing the locations of these cameras will aid us in investigations, help identify suspects, and locate evidence. This initiative will significantly bolster our efforts to protect Hammonton and its residents. Together, we can give our community an advantage over crime and ensure a safer environment for everyone.
Local business owners interested in participating can download the HPD Surveillance Camera Registry Form. Once completed, forms should be either delivered in person to:
Hammonton Police Records Department located on the second floor at Town Hall, 100 Central Ave., Hammonton, NJ
Or mailed to: Hammonton Police Department
Attention: SPOT Surveillance Camera Registry
100 Central Avenue, Hammonton, NJ, 08037
After processing, business owners will receive their S.P.O.T. decal, which should be displayed prominently on the front window or door to indicate registration in the program. If the form is submitted by mail, the decal will be personally delivered to your business. Thank you for your support!
