Our town’s parks, fields, performing
arts center and lake are centers for active and passive
recreation. Local citizens of all ages participate in visual and
performing arts through plays and musicals sponsored by the
Hammonton Recreation Department and classes and showings sponsored
by the Hammonton Arts Center.
The community provides athletic opportunities for all residents
through a variety of leagues and organizations. Our Hammonton
Little League is the oldest in New Jersey. Founded in 1947, it was
the first Little League in the world outside of Pennsylvania. In
1949, the Hammonton All-Stars won the Little League World Series.
Players on the various levels of the Hammonton Hawks represent the
town in the Atlantic County Junior Football League. The Hammonton
Youth Soccer Association draws hundreds of local youth to its
fields each year.
During the winter, the gyms of Hammonton are alive with the teams
of the Hammonton Bulldogs and the Hammonton Recreation
Department’s adult leagues. In the summer, the pool at the
Hammonton Swim club hosts the Hammonton Stingrays.
Numerous other recreational opportunities are available for
residents of all ages. The town has a team in the Atlantic
County Baseball League—
a wood-bat league that has been in existence for more than
125 years. Several health and fitness clubs, an indoor
roller-skating rink, bowling alley, tennis courts, and an
18-hole golf course are all located within the boundaries of
the town. Some of the best canoeing, kayaking, hiking, and
eco-tourism anywhere are available in and around Hammonton,
the gateway to the world-famous Pine Barrens. |
